Records in several statistical categories were set at the American Hunter Pony Classic auction on August 4, 2003 at The Andrews School in Willoughby, Ohio. The sale is held in conjunction with the State Line Tack / USAE Pony Hunter Finals.
"Statistically, this was the best American Hunter Pony Classic Sale ever" said Tim Jennings, Vice President of Professional Auction Services, Inc. Since 1995, the Virginia based firm's first year to produce the sale, 497 ponies have been sold for $3,480,050.
The high selling pony was Inner Circle, a four year old grey gelding by the British Riding Pony Stallion Rosslyn Pearl Fisher. Inner Circle was sold by his breeder, William E. Howard, III's WEHIII Stables in Aiken South Carolina. When the gavel fell Donald Campbell had purchased the sale topper at $50,000, the second highest price on record in the history of sale.
The second high selling pony was sold by the sale's leading consignor, Karen Zinkhan' Bit By Bit Stable of Maryland. In The Game, a four year old Welsh Thoroughbred cross gelding by Conways High Honors, was sold for $43,500 to Alexandria Johnson of Chagrin Falls, Ohio after a spirited bidding battle. Zinkhan sold 6 ponies for $130,800 for an average price of $21,800.
The third highest seller and high selling mare was Woodlands Jubilation who fetched a price of $43,000 The four year bay daughter of Woodlands Foxy Cloud was also the high selling VPBA registered pony. She was sold by Richard M. Taylor's Venture Stable, Agent for Pam Windley to David Birdsall of Topsfield Massachusetts. Taylor, the second leading consignor at the 2003 sale, is the Leading Consignor in the history of the sale with sales of nearly $900,000 since 1995.
Interestingly, one of the sale highlights did not meet his reserve and was not sold. Dreamboy came into the sale ranked second in the USAE Small/Medium Green standings. He was qualified for the Finals and available for a new owner's rider. His consignor, Richard Taylor, agent for the Arute family, felt that he was capable of winning the Small Green Division of the Pony Finals. The day after the sale, Dreamboy won the Small Green Division of the Pony Finals and was named Grand Champion Green Pony.
At the beginning of the sale, Professional Auction Services, Inc. presented a check for $3,000 to Edna Lytle, representing the USAE Pony Committee, for the Emerson Burr Horsemanship Fund. The auction firm has donated a total of $9,000.00 to the Emerson Burr Horsemanship Fund.
