The premier Hunter Pony Auction in America was held at Brownland Farm in Tennessee on August 4, 1997. The American Hunter Pony Classic Auction is held each year in conjunction with the AHSA / Millers Hunter Pony Finals. The auction is produced by America's leading show horse auction company, Professional Auction Services, Inc. of Leesburg, Virginia.
The sale averaged $5,153.45 on ponies actually sold. "This in one of the best Sales we have each year." Tim Jennings stated "The bidding was very active and nearly every pony here brought fair value in the sale ring." Most of the ponies offered for sale found new owners with 78% of the ponies actually selling. Buyers came from twenty states and Canada.
This auction traditionally offers quality show ponies, top prospects and breeding stock. "This is an excellent marketing tool that is easy to use and very effective," explains Tim Jennings. "Sellers can market their ponies directly to the best pony buyers that can be reached." While top prices are realized for ponies sold, many go on to outstanding show careers. Buyers who select their ponies at the American Hunter Pony Classic have a large group of excellent prospects, show ponies and breeding stock to choose from. "There have been so many ponies come from this sale that have gone on to have great show careers that it is easy to see why more and more people are using it as their first choice as a place to buy show ponies," said Jennings.
The 1997 AHSA-Miller's Hunter Pony Finals brought another "sale graduate" into the limelight. Drew Taylor guided Caitlyn Lane's Foxlair Poker to the Large Pony Championship at the 1997 Finals and was Reserve Grand Champion over-all. Foxlair Poker was sold at the 1996 American Hunter Pony Classic auction for $16,500.00 by Richard Taylor as agent for Stuart Kohler to Ed Lane's Tartan Farms.
