A standing room only crowd gathered at the Fairfield County Hunt Club in
Westport, Connecticut for the American Hunter Pony Classic held August 8,
2000. The auction of Hunter ponies, prospects and breeding stock is held
annually in conjunction with the AHSA Pony Finals. When the gavel fell on
the final pony, a record high average price per pony sold had been set at
$9,394. The old record, set in 1999, of $7,755 was bested by seventeen (17%)
percent.
Average prices for the top ponies also jumped with a record number of ponies
selling for $20,000 or more. “This helps prove that the auction method of
marketing is the most efficient and effective way to sell a quality pony. The
Thoroughbred industry has known this for a century and we hope to move the
Hunter and Sport Horse industries in that direction” said Tim Jennings, Vice
President of Professional Auction Services, Inc.
The High Selling Pony, Blue Moon, sold for $43,000 to Leslie Demerville of
Connecticut and was sold by Richard Taylor’s Venture Farm, agent. The 12
year old Welsh/Thoroughbred Cross large gelding is a seasoned campaigner with
several trips to the Pony Finals under his belt. “This pony is very solid,
dependable and safe.” said Jennings. “He rode the same for everyone who tried
him at the sale and is fancy enough to be competitive anywhere.”
The High Selling Mare, Imp, fetched a price of $42,000 and was also sold by
Richard Taylor’s Venture Farm, agent, to David Elliot & Sarah Nyland of
Pennsylvania. Imp, a 5 year old small pony, is registered VPBA and was sold
for Stewart Kohler. Kohler’s program had already produced Foxlair Poker, who
sold at the 1996 American Hunter Pony Classic in Darien, Connecticut and was
Overall Reserve Champion at the Pony Hunter Finals in 1997. Elliot and
Nyland also purchased the high selling two year old, Misty Blue Paris for
$20,000.
“The ponies that performed the best sold the best”, stated Jennings. “If a
pony had an off day or came out of the barn and did something stupid, it was
penalized by the buying public. These people are looking for something to
put their kids on and clearly wouldn’t pay for someone else’s problems. “
The American Hunter Pony Classic was managed by Professional Auction
Services, Inc. of Leesburg, Virginia. Professional Auction Services, Inc.
was founded in 1978 by Mike Jennings and Tim Jennings and has managed over
160 Horse Auctions with sales of over $70,000,000. Auctioneers for the Sale
were Mike Jennings and Tim Jennings of Professional Auction Services, Inc.
