A standing room only crowd packed the cattle sale arena at the Western North Carolina Agricultural Center for the American Hunter Pony Classic held August 5, 2001. The auction of Hunter ponies, prospects and breeding stock is held annually in conjunction with the USA Equestrian (formerly AHSA) Pony Finals. When the gavel fell on the final pony, the average price per pony sold was set at $9,394, the third highest in the history of the sale and only slightly less than the 1999 Sale in Culpeper, Virginia, of $7,755.

The High Selling Pony, Champlain Fedora, sold for $46,500 to Patricia Kirik of Connecticut and was sold by Gary Duffy and Sara Keller, agent. The 7 year old Welsh/Thoroughbred Cross large Mmare is a three time Pony Finals Qualifier.

The 2000 Sale also had the highest rate of ponies not sold since 1996. According to Tim Jennings of Professional Auction Services, Inc. there were several factors that impacted the statistics. “The economy was a major factor. It is slow and there is less disposable income at nearly all levels.” said Jennings. “The location of the sale was probably the biggest factor. There are not a lot of hunter pony enthusiasts in the mountains around Asheville. Add to that the new schedule that moved the sale to Monday, which cut out some buyers who were showing other places on Sunday and reduced the preview time. The facilities were also a problem. We had to use a cattle sale arena and did not have adequate space for the demonstration.”

“The ponies that performed the best sold the best”, stated Jennings. “If a pony had an off day or came out of the barn and did something stupid, it was penalized by the buying public. These people are looking for something to put their kids on and clearly wouldn’t pay for someone else’s problems. “ Jennings also stated “despite all of the problems, we had plenty of money bid on most of the ponies that were offered for sale. People haven’t realized that most of these ponies are not worth what they may have been worth a year or two ago.”
