Record High Price Set
2002 American Hunter Pony Classic

(Results in PDF Version)

High Seller

A sale record price was set for the High Selling Pony at the American Hunter Pony Classic on August 5, 2002. When the gavel fell on Hip Number 62, the final bid price of $58,500 had bested the previous mark, set in 1999, by fifteen percent. An active crowd suffered record heat at the Kentucky Horse Park in Lexington, Kentucky and watched as Rapunzel became the highest priced pony sold in the history of the sale.

Rapunzel, a four year old Welsh/Thoroughbred Cross daughter of Glencoe Nimbus, was sold by Richard Taylor's Venture Farm, agent, to Nancy Moore's Peaceable Kingdom Farm in Southern Pines, North Carolina. Moore was in the process of moving to North Carolina from New York and purchased Rapunzel bidding on the telephone. "Rapunzel is probably the fanciest prospect we have seen at the sale" said Tim Jennings, Vice President of Professional Auction Services, Inc.

The auction of Hunter ponies, prospects and breeding stock is held annually in conjunction with the USA Equestrian Pony Finals. The sale showed remarkable strength in light of the current economic recession. In addition to a record high seller, the sale was near the top in several other categories. It was the second highest average sale price at $7,914; the second highest percentage of completed sales at seventy percent; the third highest gross sales; and the fourth highest median price at $4,500.

Average prices for the top ponies also jumped with twenty seven percent (27%) of ponies selling for $10,000 or more. "This helps prove that the auction method of marketing is the most efficient and effective way to sell a quality pony. The Thoroughbred industry has known this for a century and we hope to move the Pony, Hunter and Sport Horse industries in that directionÓ said Jennings.

The second High Selling Pony, Hi Foolutin, sold for $45,000 to Carlos Shay Huesca of South Carolina and was sold by Greg Rhoades. The four year old Welsh/Thoroughbred Cross medium mare is a striking palomino.

The High Selling Gelding, Land's End Jasper, fetched a price of $30,500 and was sold by Karen Zinkhan to Diana Sturgis of Ohio. Land's End Jasper is a four year old Half Welsh son of Leading Sire Carolinas Red Fox and was 2001 USA Equestrian Zone 3 Pony Breeding Champion and also placed second at the prestigious Devon Horse Show.

"The ponies that performed the best sold the bestÓ, stated Jennings. "If a pony had an off day or came out of the barn and did something stupid, it was penalized by the buying public. These people are looking for something to put their kids on and clearly wouldn't pay for someone else's problems. "
