Auctioneers Chosen for Chincoteague Pony Sale
The Chincoteague Volunteer Fire Department has chosen Professional Auction Services, Inc. as auctioneers for the world famous auction of Chincoteague ponies at the annual Pony Penning. Mike Jennings and Tim Jennings, owners of Professional Auction Services, Inc., will serve as auctioneers.
The Pony Penning began as a fund raiser for the Chincoteague Volunteer Fire Department in 1924 and is held the last Wednesday and Thursday of July. The event gained lasting international prominence following the 1947 publishing of Marguerite Henry’s classic book, Misty Of Chincoteague.
The pony herd is owned by the Chincoteague Volunteer Fire Department and is rounded up by “saltwater cowboys” . The herd swims across the channel between Assateague island and Chincoteague at slack tide on Wednesday. Most of the foals are auctioned off on Thursday and the remaining ponies swim back to Assateague on Friday. New owners must be able to provide safe, humane transportation for their purchases.
Professional Auction Services, Inc., of Leesburg, Virginia, was founded in 1978 by Mike Jennings and Tim Jennings and has managed over 160 Horse Auctions with sales of nearly $70,000,000.00.
