2000 Eastern Spring Sale Results
Records were set in nearly every statistical category at the 29th Annual Eastern Spring Sale. New auction records were set across the board just one day after serious trouble in the Stock Markets that saw the Dow Jones Index suffer it's worst single day point loss and the NASDAQ finished a week long 25% free fall. "We expected the numbers to be off somewhat due to the problems in the financial markets on Friday" said Tim Jennings Vice President of Professional Auction Services, Inc. "It didn't seem to bother these horse people at all."
The average sale price rose nine percent (9%) over the 1999 sale average to $3,127 per horse. The median price rose sixteen percent (16%) to $2,900 per horse. Both increases were driven by a dramatic jump in the number of horses sold for $5,000 or more which rose twenty eight percent (28%).
Quarter Horses led the way with an increase in average price of eleven percent (11%) to $3,417. The median price for Quarter Horses was up twenty six percent (26%) to $3,150. Quarter Horses accounted for the High Selling Horse and High Selling Mare.
The average price for Paints increased by sixteen percent (16%) to their highest levels since 1995 at $2,712 and is up forty five percent from it's 1998 low. The average price for the Top Twenty Five selling Paints rose by an impressive thirty two percent (32%). "The Paint market continues to make solid gains in spite of increased number of Paints being registered every year ." said Jennings. "The APHA (American Point Horse Association) has done a great marketing job to increase the breed's exposure."
The average price for Appaloosas jumped fourteen percent (14%) while the number of Appaloosas offered exploded by 175%. "We are pleased with the growth in our Appaloosa market. We have increased our promotion into the App community and they have responded." stated Jennings. "It looks a lot like our Paint Market did eleven years ago."
Most of the horses offered for sale found new owners with 80% of the horses offered actually selling. Buyers came from fifteen states. "This was the strongest Spring Sale we have ever had. It looks like the horse industry boom is still gong strong" said Jennings.
The 2000 Eastern Spring Sale was the 29th Spring sale for Quarter Horses & Paints held in the Sale Pavilion at the Maryland State Fairgrounds in Timonium, Maryland. The past twenty two sales have been managed by Professional Auction Services, Inc. of Leesburg, Virginia. Professional Auction Services, Inc. was founded in 1978 by Mike Jennings and Tim Jennings and has managed over 160 Horse Auctions with sales of nearly $70,000,000.00. Auctioneers for the Sale were Mike Jennings and Tim Jennings of Professional Auction Services, Inc.
