For the first time since 1995 the average selling price was lower than the
previous year. This year's average price of $8,567 was four percent, (4%),
lower that the 1999 average. "There are several factors at work here; the
uncertainty of the contested Presidential election, higher fuel prices,
instability in the Stock Markets and a general oversupply of horses on the
market", said Professional Auction Services, Inc. Vice President Tim
Jennings.
"The demand for the best quality horses continues to increase and they are
selling for more money than ever. We sold 96 horses for $10,000 or more and
a record 242 horses for $5,000 or more over the three days of this sale."
said Jennings. "The strength of the market is definitely in the better
quality horses. We are starting to see the effects of over supply in several
areas, particularly in the Western Pleasure prospects." The average price
for Yearling and Weanling Western Pleasure prospects declined by nineteen
percent, (19%), even though the number of prospects offered in the sale was
reduced by 28 from 1999 levels. The number of Hunter Under Saddle prospects
offered decreased by nine percent, (9%), while the average price jumped by
twenty four percent to $8,052.
"The prices here are a direct reflection of the market conditions, " said
Jennings. "This may have been the best promoted sale in the history of the
Industry." Sale advertising included 24 pages in the Quarter Horse Journal
as well as advertising in the Quarter Horse News, Pacific Coast Journal and
the Equine Chronicle. "We had a full house for every session of the sale
from beginning to end," stated Jennings. "The buying public told us what
these horses are worth."
The high selling horse was At Long Last, sold for $130,000 to Jane Shumacher
of Washington. At Long Last is a prominent sire of Halter horses and was 4
time AQHA World Champion Stallion, Congress Grand Champion Stallion, 7 time
AQHA World Champion Sire, 1997, 1998 and 1999 AQHA Leading Sire of Halter
Horses and a 1998 and 1999 Equi-Stat Leading Sire of Halter Money Earners.
At Long Last was part of the Dispersal of Don and Carol Dewrell of Fort
Walton Beach, Florida. The 27 horses sold in the Dispersal averaged
$14,600.
The sale also featured the Broodmare reduction of the Classic Acres, owned
Roger and Cathy Perry and Brandon Perry. The reduction featured 17 mares in
foal to Leading Sire Kid Clu and averaged $19,729. The Perry's offering
included the High Selling Mare, Velvet Skipa Star, who sold for $85,000 to
Jim Estes of Mississippi. Velvet Skip Star is a World Champion Producer and
is the dam of World Champion Sire The Phenomenal.
The High Selling Mare in the Performance Session was Rubys Red Peppy, part of
the Lazy E Ranch Production Sale. The six year old daughter of Mr San Peppy
is out of Bar J Jackie, World Champion and earner of nearly 1,200 AQHA
Performance points. Rubys Red Peppy sold in foal to Leading Sire Smart Chic
Olena for $50,000 to Chaparrosa Enterprises LP of Pryor, Texas. The Lazy E
consignment was sold absolute without reserve. "We brought them to sell, not
to get appraised", said Lazy E Manager Butch Wise. Wise returned to Oklahoma
City for the World Sale from the Keenland Fall Thoroughbred sale where the
ranch had sold a sizable consignment.
The Lazy E Production provided one of the best stories of the sale. Jacks
Silver Light sold on Friday for $3,700 as a ROM producer. On Saturday she
became a World Champion producer when her four year old colt by Gallo Del
Cielo named King Of The Henhouse earned the title of AQHA World Champion
Junior Heeling Horse.
The High Selling Gelding was Reckon Ima Jon, a two year old Hunter Under
Saddle prospect sold as Hip 8 on Thursday for $58,000. The 16.3 hand gray
gelding is a full brother to Amateur World Champion Hunter Under Saddle horse
Nitro Jon. He was purchased by Cecilia Hylton of Virginia and will be
trained and shown by Roger and Linda Landis. Reckon Ima Jon was sold by
Cathy Jennings of Charles Town, West Virginia. Jennings owned and trained
Held Captive, who swept the Hunter Under Saddle Futurities at the 1999
All-American Quarter Horse Congress. When asked why she sold Reckon Ima Jon
at Auction she replied "The World Show Sale is the best place to sell a
great prospect."
Two yearling colts shared the top price for a prospect of $30,000. The High
Selling Hunter Under Saddle prospect was Coastal Sky, a gray son of Skys Blue
Boy. The colt was sold by Greg Hale of Perryton, Texas and purchased by
Tracy and Becky Schooler and Dawn Haas of Indiana. Hale has sold yearling
prospects at the World Sale for years, many of which have gone on to amass
impressive show records including Im Invious, who sold in 1998 and was
Champion of the 1999 Congress 2 Year Old Limited Open Hunter Under Saddle
Futurity. Schooler was enthusiastic about his purchase saying "This colt
looks like he could be a big winner in the Futurities.
A Western Pleasure prospect by Radical Rodder named The Radical Hour also
sold for $30,000 to Ohio trainer Ty Hornick. The Radical Hour was sold by
Miers Quarter Horses of Abiliene, Texas. Owner Shannon Miers was in the
hospital at the time of the World Sale recovering from a car accident.
The High Selling filly was Awesomeotamus by the 1999 World Sale High Seller,
An Awesome Mister. The bay filly, who sold for $20,000, is Longe Line
winner and is out of Congress 3-Y-O Non-Pro Snaffle Bit Derby Champion and
Leading Money Earner, Zippopotamus.
The High Selling Yearling Gelding was Walk On Top, who fetched a price of
$27,000 from Tim and Lou Petty of Florida. Walk On Top had an extensive show
record in the Hunter conformation classes at the major East Coast shows
including being named Champion Non-Thoroughbred Yearling at the 104th Devon
Horse Show and Best Young Horse at the Capital Challenge. The 16 hand black
gelding was sold by Jennings Quarter Horses. "Walk On Top is one of the most
beautiful Quarter Horses I have ever seen," said Tim Jennings. "Everywhere
we showed him this summer he would draw a crowd. People just wanted to get
close to him. I have never seen anything like it. To top it off, he is a
great mover and an incredible athlete. We bought him after he won Devon just
to sell in this sale. We want to show people that the best horses can sell
extremely well at auction." Jennings Quarter Horses sold the High Selling
Horse in the Performance Sessions at the 1999 World Sale.
The World Sale Finalist's Supplement proved to be very successful averaging
$7,514 with seven of the eleven horses offered being sold. Late entries were
accepted for the World Championship Quarter Horse Show Sale for a special
supplement to the World Championship Quarter Horse Show Sale by accepting
additional entries for the sale that were not cataloged. The Finalist's
Supplement was restricted to horses that Qualified for the Finals in any
Performance or Halter Class at the 2000 World Championship Quarter Horse
Show. Horses in the Finalist's Supplement sold on Saturday, November 18,
2000 immediately following the Performance Session.
The Amateur division of the 2000 World Championship Quarter Horse Show
provided a success story from the 1999 World Sale. The 2000 Amateur Reserve
World Champion Amateur Yearling Stallion, Dawns Knight, was purchased by his
owner/exhibitor Lana Brooks at the 1999 World Sale for $4,400.
The World Championship Quarter Horse Show Sale continued its broad national
and international appeal. Horses from 39 states and Canada were offered for
sale. Buyers from 38 states purchased horses at the sale along with
international buyers from Canada, Mexico and Germany.
The Sale was managed by Professional Auction Services, Inc. of Leesburg,
Virginia. Professional Auction Services, Inc was founded in 1978 by Mike
Jennings and Tim Jennings and has managed nearly 165 horse auctions with
gross sales of over $70,000,000. The firm has been retained by AQHA to
manage the sale through 2002. Auctioneers for the sale were Mike Jennings,
Tim Jennings, Keith Babb of Monroe, Louisana, Tony Langdon of Dallas, Texas
and Joel White of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma.
